Pride Survey
The PRIDE Survey is a national survey of youth in schools. It is widely utilized to measure substance use, abuse, attitudes toward substance use and the overall climate in schools and communities.
In May of 2009, in cooperation with local school districts, Our Futures in Licking County administered the Pride Survey to students in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12. Seven out of ten public school districts in the county participated with 5,097 students completing the survey (85% response rate). All school systems that participated agreed to allow the test to be administered annually in the future. The full report can be viewed at: http://www.communitymhrb.org/links.cfm.
The PRIDE Survey is being administered again in the Spring of 2010. By comparing multiple years of the survey results we can identify target areas, reviewtrends and measure successes.
The results of the 2009 survey indicated that:
- Monthly use of alcohol, marijuana and tobacco was higher for 8th, 10th, and 12th graders in Licking County than the national average.
- Alcohol, tobacco and other drug (ATOD) usage rates for 6th graders were slightly lower than the national average.
- Alcohol is the most commonly used drug.
- Alcohol, tobacco and marijuana are readily available for high school students
- Most students believe ATOD use is harmful.
- Most alcohol, tobacco and marijuana use occurs at home, not in school.
- Compared to the national PRIDE sample, Licking County youth appear to have easier access to alcohol, tobacco, marijuana and other drugs, less parental disapproval of alcohol and tobacco use, and more alcohol and marijuana use in private homes (own home or friends).
